Sports Massage

Sports Massage involves Deep Tissue Manipulation & is aimed at Injury Prevention.

A general relaxation massage will often cover the whole body in around 60-70 mins, however a sports Massage may focus a large amount of this time on particular areas of strain - depending on the person's sport.

Important Reasons why You should have Regular Sports Massage...

  • Regular Sports Massage with an experienced Practitioner will identify problem areas BEFORE INJURY OCCURS
  • Improve recovery post race/training (via stimulation of cellular metabolism & promoting lymphatic movement)
  • Stretch is exerted on muscles (& tissue) that may otherwise be missed - this is helpful in INJURY PREVENTION

Sports Massage can also be utilised to manage a pre-existing injury.

Due to the multidisciplinary aspect of our clinic we can also offer the injured athlete a Sports Therapy treatment which involves Sports Massage combined with Acupuncture & Dry Needling techniques for optimum results.

Signs & Symptoms of Common Sports Injuries

You feel Discomfort or Pain - what is causing it?

Muscles

  •  increased tension or spasm    - this can be a small part of a muscle, whole muscle, or group of muscles.

Just a few motor units in spasm can be palpated by your Sports Massage therapist & can be delt with before more harm is done.

  • ruptures of muscle fibres        - local small ruptures of muscle fibres can be felt as swelling with increased local tension & pain.

                                                    - larger muscle ruptures can be felt as a hard bulk of contracted muscle.  This can actually be further along the muscle from the site of the trauma.  Your Sports Massage therapist will notice a hollow at the site of the trauma if the swelling is not too severe.

  •  trigger points    - can feel tender but will often only be picked up by an experienced Sports Masseur.
  • scar tissue         - is the result of almost any tissue damage.  It will feel harder & less flexible than healthier tissue & obvioulsy can impede muscle function.
  • fibrosis            - is different to scar tissue & is the result of long-standing contraction
  • minor muscle atrophy    - may be difficult to locate by visual inspection but can be easily identified by palpation during your Sports Massage.  Obviously larger atrophies will be observed visually.

 Tendons

  • are prone to inflammation along the length of the tendon (tendonitis)
  • symptoms may be felt inside the tendon sheath in acute cases
  • hard lumps & particles in tendons are indicitive of scar tissue
  • partially torn tendons will have damaged fibres which are palpable & tender in the early stages

Ligaments

  • torn ligaments will cause inflammation pain & joint instability

Bursa

  • are fluid sacks that reduce friction near joints & muscle attachments - it is possible for these to become inflamed.

Skin

Did You know:  long term, painful conditions can lead to autonomic nervous system disturbance causing constriction of blood vessels (& therefore blood flow) - this will impede healing & can be noticed as decreased temperature in the affected region.

  • increased sensitivity
  • numbness
  • pins & needles
  • heat &/or swelling
  • temperature changes
